The EYFS Framework

Preparing for Key Stage 1

Reception is the final EYFS year. Children are formally assessed against the Early Learning Goals (ELGs) at year-end, marking the transition into the National Curriculum.

🔤 Literacy (Phonics & Reading)

Systematic synthetic phonics teaching (typically following a scheme such as Read Write Inc or Letters and Sounds), daily guided reading, and early independent writing.

🔢 Mathematics

Number bonds to 10, simple addition and subtraction, shape, space, and measure — buildingfluency with number before Year 1.

💬 Communication & Language

Confident speaking in full sentences, following instructions, and engaging in class discussions.

🤝 Personal, Social & Emotional Development

Growing independence, self-regulation, and cooperative play — key readiness skills for Year 1.

🌍 Understanding the World & 🎨 Expressive Arts

Topic-based learning connecting science, geography, technology, and creative expression.

✅ Early Learning Goals Assessment

At the end of Reception, each child is assessed against 17 Early Learning Goals across all seven areas, shared with parents in a end-of-year report.
